Angles & Drop step
AVERAGE
To track a deep ball, pivot one foot and "drop and step" with the other in the direction of the ball. Keeping the ball in front of you at all times is ideal. Taking a backward angle to get into this position is sometimes necessary.
Flyball Mechanics
BELOW AVERAGE PLUS
Catching the flyball correctly involves using one hand when on the run and two hands when stationary. The catch should be above the shoulders with the fingers pointing up. (unless it is a running catch to the glove side where it would be shoulder height) Momentum forward should lead into the catch.
Groundball Mechanics
BELOW AVERAGE PLUS
A groundball should be fielded with the glove side foot forward and the ball just to the outside of that foot. The body must get low enough where the fingers of the glove are pointing forward, not straight down. This should be done one handed in order to balance and keep the momentum going forward.
Transfer and Crowhop
AVERAGE MINUS
Once the ball is in your glove, leap forward with both legs starting first with your throwing side foot while at the same time turning your body to the throwing side. During this "hop", the ball should be transferred to your throwing hand. To throw, perform a big arm circle that passes down near the hip and releases high near the ear.
Outfielder Overall Aggressiveness
AVERAGE MINUS
The Outfielder's Overall Aggressiveness is very important. An aggressive fielder is fun to watch, plays hard every time, and sets themselves up to make great playse. The key is to have a grade of “Plus” or higher in this category. Stay Aggressive!
Overall Comments:
Retreats well with first step back. Fast feet. Insecure catch with a stabbing stiff arm. Fields like an infielder. Needs to come through the ball. Crow hop ok with good momentum.

8

DI/All-American/Pro Standout. Your outfielding skills are OUTSTANDING and now it's all about the fine tuning and staying consistent throughout your baseball journey. Work hard to keep what you have! Great job here!

7

DI/All-American/Pro Player. Excellent job here. You're on your way to OUTSTANDING. The main goal when working on your game is to have "PLUS" mechanics and not only did you accomplish that goal, but you have surpassed it. Now reach for the Gold, and keep working hard on your game to achieve ultimate greatness in achieving all "8's", a Perfect Score!

6

DI/All-American/Pro Potential. In the MLB Scouting world, we call this "Above Average" or "Plus". Nice job in putting a very nice-looking outfield game together here. There are obviously always things you can do to improve, so pay attention to the scouts comments that are recommended here to help your game advance. Great job here!

5

High School Player/College Potential. Very nice-looking outfielding skills. It's good to know as a player that you have a nice AVERAGE outfield game, but there are pieces here in your game that can improve, so work hard and focus on the areas of your game here that have been identified that are not "Plus" (6+). Pay attention to the scouts comments and work hard. You can do this!

4

Middle School, High School Player. You have some really good qualities in your game, and then there are areas that you need to improve in so pay attention to the scouts comments to learn from, and go out and practice what you are being taught. I know you can improve here from BELOW AVERAGE with hard work, and believe you can achieve anything!

3

Middle School Recreational/JV,Freshman High School Player. Looks like there are some good things happening and there are categories in your BELOW AVERAGE MINUS game we need to improve on to help you be the outfielder you want to be. Take one category of your game at a time, read the scouts comments, and then go out and practice hard for a few days on that "one" piece of your game. Then move on to the next category and do the same thing. Your hard work will pay off!

2

Recreational Player. So, we have some work to do to climb out of the POOR category here and begin your journey to get better. The best way to get better in anything you do in life is to understand what you need to work on and accept that you need to work hard to get better. So, let’s get better. Take it one category at a time and read the scouts comments in each category, and then go out and practice that one lesson and part of your game one category or part at a time until you feel like you've mastered it. Rome wasn't built in a day, so realize that your outfield game will not just magically be great overnight. Takes time and practice to perfect it. You can do this!

Every athlete wants to have "PLUS" mechanics. It's why we hit off the Tee, throw our Bullpens and practice to be great. If our mechanics are not good or just average, it becomes more difficult to achieve our own Greatness.

"GO FOR THE 6" pushes every athlete to train hard to achieve "PLUS" mechanics. ("Plus" in the Scouting world equals the number "6"

Professional Grade Scale ranges from a eight (8) to a two (2) with 8 being Outstanding, 5 being Average, and 2 being Poor. A player's goal should be to have 6 or higher grades on their mechanics and overall game.
